🌧️ Navigating Floods, Rising OPEX, & Risk

🌍 What’s Happening to LATAM Agricultural Insurance?

Floods are becoming more frequent and severe globally, with LATAM experiencing a sharp increase of over 66% in flood events since 2000, rising from 150 to over 250. Their impact on agriculture is profound. Beyond the visible damage to land and infrastructure, these extreme weather events are driving significant shifts in the insurance landscape—particularly for the agricultural sector.

🗝 How Flooding is Reshaping Insurance Costs

As flood risks increase, so do the costs of managing them. The graph above illustrates a clear trend:

  • Agricultural insurance premium averages have steadily increased, rising by approximately 60%, from around $750 USD in 2000 to over $1,200 USD by 2023.
  • Flood events in LATAM have surged from 150 in 2000 to over 250 in 2023.
  • Related economic damages have double in the same period, from $100 billion USD in 2018 to $200 Billion USD in 2023.

Despite these increasing risks, agricultural insurance coverage remains uneven across LATAM, with an estimated 70% of smallholder farmers operating without insurance. This leaves millions of vulnerable farmers at even higher risk of losing their livelihoods. Faced with increasingly frequent floods, smallholder farmers may need to adopt insurance coverage to protect their livelihoods, or risk significant losses with each harvest.

✨ Unlock Resilience and Risk Management with Marvin

Partnering with Marvin addresses the uneven access to agricultural insurance by providing smallholder farmers and agribusinesses with the tools to anticipate flood risks and mitigate their impacts, such as water stress on crops, decreased production yield, inefficient irrigation planning, and providing flood risk projections for specific areas up to 20 years into the future.

Our climate intelligence platform offers watershed-level visibility, real-time flood potential alerts, and insights on water access risks to help businesses and vulnerable communities take proactive measures. By effectively managing these risks, Marvin helps reduce rising insurance premiums, safeguard operations, and transform climate challenges into opportunities for growth.
